Biography
Jack Neushloss was born on 12 September 1947 in Riga, Latvia. He graduated from Riga's 25th Secondary School on 25 June 1967, obtained a driving licence there later that year, and studied physics at the Latvian State University named after Pēteris Stučka (completing the course in 1969) before taking an engineering-economics qualification at the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute (1966–71) and a further course in heat engineering measurement in Leningrad in January 1970. At various times he also worked as a welder and later as a consultant. With his first wife, Shulamit "Shula", he had a daughter, Ruth, born in Riga on 17 July 1971. He left for Israel via Poland and Austria on 25 November 1971, arriving by plane on 6 December 1971, and served in the artillery corps of the Israel Defence Forces in 1974. On 6 October 1981 he emigrated to South Africa, and on 1 March 1982 he married [living relative] in Johannesburg. From August 1982 he worked as an officer and manager in the System Planning Section of the Operations Department at Eskom, took a B.Sc. Honours in Energy Studies at the Rand Afrikaans University (1985) and an MBA at the University of the Witwatersrand (1988–91), and was elected a member of the South African Institute of Electrical Engineers in April 1986. He was granted South African permanent residence in October 1989 and became a South African citizen by naturalisation on 30 September 1994. In January 1997 he moved to the UK, and from 1 September 1998 worked as an energy specialist at the law firm CMS Cameron McKenna in London, co-authoring a December 1999 article on the England and Wales electricity trading arrangements. Between 1999 and 2013 his work with the firm also took him to Moscow, where he held a Russian work permit as "Head of Electric Power Direction," while keeping a London residence; from 2006 he and Genia also lived in the United States. He retired in May 2013 and later settled in Naples, Florida, where he died on 1 March 2019 and was cremated.
